How I began this journey with essential oils
I am a creature of curiosity, and with my background as a therapist, I am non judgemental & open to new ideas. My personal belief is… “if something doesn’t hurt, why not give it a try?”
Whenever I went to get a massage at the spa, the smell was “delicious” & the aroma won me over with relaxation.
Once I became pregnant, I was more mindful of the products I used and consumed, so organic face wash, & lotions, etc. I have aromatherapy plug ins at home. I keep peppermint on hand for my all too common migraines. I use aromatherapy hand wash, aromatherapy laundry detergent, the list goes on and on.
Then once I had children and they started getting sick, I started looking for more natural remedies (because as good nurturers we always take care of others better than we would ourselves.)
I noticed that the humidifier had a compartment for vicks vapor with LAVENDER! Then my wheels starting turning & I found a natural essential oils “remedy” for colds that were prepared especially for children (roll on & not as strong), then I found a calming lavender one to assist in relaxing before bed. I have the Johnson & Johnson brand of “aromatherapy bedtime bath” with LAVENDER. Everyone is on to something here right?
Then in my private practice, I had so many patients struggling with anxiety & depression. My wheels are always spinning, how can I help them more? Whether they were on medication or initially resistant to medication, what can I offer as a resource to supplement or aide them on their journey to emotional wellness?
I started searching for someone who could provide knowledge on oils, education, not just a salesperson. I had been looking for months and no one felt like a good fit.
Then while preparing for a self-care event I was hosting I came across a Latina, Registered Nutritionist, who taught yoga, was a PUMA sponsor, AND had an entire page dedicated to essential oils. I contacted her directly and asked for her help. Shortly thereafter we met in person.
When we met and I asked her if she would be willing to help my patients, she looked at me, & challenged me to help them myself. “I do not know enough, how can I? You learn as I did, you consume, you grow, then you educate, empower & teach your patients to advocate for themselves and GROW!”
So here we are together, you and me!
My History with “Essential Oils”
The first time I can remember encountering true (homemade) plant based care was my grandmother. I had a stye in my eye, and she quickly had me fetch a white flower from her garden, she added water in a pot, brought it to boil, & added this flower. I don’t remember the steps after that, but the next thing I recall were cold cotton balls on my closed eyes. She assured me it was “Santo remedio” i.e., a sure thing, “magic cure.” She had aloe in the backyard too, which was often used after a long day at the beach. I grew up with these beautiful plant based remedies but they were just a part of my life, but I never connected these with “essential oils.”
So essential oils are plants that are processed and distilled in a fashion that is compressed as an oil. They can be used in different ways…topically, aroma, ingested, even used in your water.
Can you imagine if the Latinos in my community new that their ancestors’ remedies were now available in a different medium…oils?!
I am so excited to share this with all of you & can’t wait to help you learn & grow some more.
I have purchased random brands not knowing distinction from one or the other. Whether it was at a spa, nutritionist, health food store or even grocery store. Bath & Body works aromatherapy line, Johnson & Johnson baby aromatherapy products, Vicks Lavender for colds, the list goes on and on. In reality these companies do not focus on essential oils. They kindly offer exposure but it is not “their thing.”
I had heard of a few companies, that were dedicated to essential oils in passing, but started researching them on my own.
I chose dōTERRA as my go to company, because I liked their quality & their mission of helping others, educating, empowering & giving back to the community. No company is perfect, and there are positives & negatives, but overall I felt that the product quality, support & education dōTERRA provides was aligned with my mission of passionately helping others advocate for themselves, & focus on self-care & self-love.
Through DoTerra, communities have sprouted all over the world harnessing a drive to focus on their health, care and self-empowerment with over 7 million people and counting! Not only do they encompass a balanced approach to living a toxic-free life for all, but they have an established board of medical professionals to educate, research and publish evidence-based studies using oils. Clinics are on the rise with natural solutions being prescribed as the first line of defense for our bodies to heal and they are adamant about growing while staying true to their co-impact sourcing model and stamp of purity, CPTG.
What This Means
Co-impact sourcing – DoTerra sources their oils globally and work directly with farmers that have been harvesting plants for centuries in lands where they naturally thrive (tropical fruits just won’t grow the same in the dessert just like certain flowers won’t make it in the humidity or cold regions). They carefully choose and focus on cultivating symbiotic relationships with farmers and support their community with schools, clinics and other resources that might not exist in certain remote areas of the world. Their model simply creates global abundance! More on this here: www.sourcetoyou.com
CPTG – Because essential oils are kind of a free-for-all when it comes to creating, labeling and selling oils – not all companies that are producing them necessarily focus on a quality product. Not all oils are created equal and although plants are incredibly powerful, if we are purchasing a diluted product or one that contains fillers or other ingredients, we could be blocking ourselves from receiving the full benefits and potentially absorbing other unknown chemicals! DoTerra makes sure every batch of oil is tested 10+ times before being distributed and stands behind making sure their products are unaltered and safe for us to use.

What are Essential Oils
Essential oils are concentrated extracts that are distilled directly from plants, specifically from the bark, seeds, flowers and leaves. These oils are extremely unique and versatile, for each plant contains volatile compounds that create the aroma of a flower or plant. They are incredibly powerful and assimilate with our body’s chemical composition, meaning they support your body in its natural healing process so that you can focus on being the best you at all times.
When it comes to buying oils, it’s key to be aware that not all oils are created equal. In fact, there is no existing committee or governing body that regulates the production, purity or claims made by many essential oil companies. Because essential oils are such highly concentrated extracts (50-70x more powerful than dried herbs alone) and can take tons of plants, petals, even years to produce, it is important to know how and where they are being sourced from.. and we obviously want to get the best quality of oils offered in the market!
History of Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy (the use of essential oils and plant extracts) has been a subject of interest for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks, Romans, Chinese, and Indians used essential oils for rituals and religious practices, recognizing the oils’ ability to influence human feelings. Even with this rich history of aromatherapy, the term wasn’t officially coined until the 20th century, and it took many years for the scientific community to recognize the emotional benefits of aromatherapy. After substantial research in the 1990s, biologists began to more fully understand how chemical sensors in the body respond to the effects of scent. This research has opened many minds to a concept that ancient civilizations discovered long ago: aromatherapy can have a remarkable effect on human emotion and mood.
